Residents of the far-flung barangay of Cabunga-an in San Remigio, Antique have asked their mayor for a public cemetery to avoid walking for several kilometers to bury their dead.

Mayor Margarito Mission said on Friday that the village can only be reached by walking about three hours from the nearest barangay of San Rafael, which is four kilometers away from the town proper.

The local government brought its various services to Barangay Cabunga-an on Thursday.

“We went to Cabunga-an bringing food packs to 124 households, conduct immunization among the children, and for a public consultation among the barangay officials and residents there,” Mission said.

During the public consultation, the barangay folks brought up their concern of having a public cemetery since they do not have one.

“I told them to look for a lot, which the LGU could buy for their cemetery,” he added.

The barangay folks would bury their dead in a public cemetery in Barangay Osorio, which is about five kilometers away and could only be reached by foot.

Mission said that he made it a point that he could visit all the 45 barangays of the third class municipality and bring the LGU services and the government closer to the people.

“I only have four more barangays to visit,” he said.

These are mountainous barangays of General Fullon, Banbanan, Bulan-bulan, and Insubuan that could only be reached by foot.

The food packs, distributed to 124 households in the barangay, contained soy sauce, cooking oil, coffee, and sugar. Each pack is worth PHP300.

The Municipal Health Office (MHO) also immunized the children against preventable diseases like polio.

A water hose was given to the barangay for their communal water system, while a feeding activity was also held. (PNA)
